George Michael was an English singer, songwriter, and record producer. Born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou on June 25, 1963, in East Finchley, London, Michael began his career by forming the pop duo Wham! with Andrew Ridgeley in 1981. The duo enjoyed considerable success throughout the 1980s, selling over 30 million records worldwide.

After Wham! disbanded in 1986, Michael embarked on a successful solo career. His debut solo album, Faith, was released in 1987 and was a critical and commercial success, selling over 25 million copies worldwide. The album won two Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

Michael released several more successful albums throughout the 1990s and 2000s, including Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 (1990), Older (1996), and Patience (2004). He also enjoyed success as a songwriter, penning hits for artists such as Aretha Franklin, Elton John, and Whitney Houston.

Michael was a vocal advocate for LGBT rights. He came out as gay in 1998, and he used his platform to speak out against homophobia and discrimination. He was also a generous philanthropist, donating millions of dollars to various charities.

George Michael died on December 25, 2016, at the age of 53. He was found dead in his home in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. His death was ruled a heart attack.
